FREE 10-POINT CHECK

Give your WordPress website a useful once-over.

Ten questions, practical guidance, and one manageable next action. No signup or purchase required.

How to use this check

Work through the checks and record a simple result for each: Yes, Partly, No or Not sure. Write down one piece of evidence. When finished, choose up to three actions to address first.

This is an introductory self-check, not a security or accessibility certification.

01

Homepage clarity

Ask: Can a new visitor understand who your site is for and what it offers within a few seconds?

Check: Open the homepage in a private browser window. Ask someone unfamiliar with your work to explain its purpose.

Next step: Rewrite the main headline and introduction around the visitor’s needs.

02

Navigation

Ask: Are the most important pages easy to find in the menu?

Check: Use your website on desktop and mobile without relying on search.

Next step: Reduce unnecessary menu items and use descriptive labels.

03

Mobile usability

Ask: Can visitors read text, tap links and complete key actions on a phone?

Check: Check several real page types on a phone and in browser responsive mode.

Next step: Fix overlapping elements, cramped controls and unreadable text.

04

Search Console

Ask: Is your domain verified and collecting search performance data?

Check: Open Google Search Console and confirm the correct property exists.

Next step: Verify the site and check that useful search data is available.

05

Search availability

Ask: Can important public pages be crawled and indexed where appropriate?

Check: Use Search Console URL Inspection for selected pages and check accidental noindex rules.

Next step: Investigate blocked or excluded pages that should appear in search.

06

Internal links

Ask: Can people reach key pages from relevant pages on your website?

Check: Follow a new visitor’s journey from the homepage to your main content.

Next step: Add clear, helpful contextual links where they belong.

07

HTTPS

Ask: Does your website load securely with HTTPS and without browser warnings?

Check: Check the address bar and review important pages for insecure resources.

Next step: Ask your host to resolve certificate or mixed-content problems.

08

Site maintenance

Ask: Are WordPress core, themes and plugins supported and maintained?

Check: Review Dashboard → Updates and identify anything unused.

Next step: Back up, test compatibility and update responsibly; remove abandoned tools.

09

Recoverable backups

Ask: Do you have recent backups and a tested recovery approach?

Check: Confirm off-site backup availability and the latest successful restore test.

Next step: Document a restore procedure and test it safely in staging.

10

Measurement

Ask: Do you know whether visitors complete the actions that matter to your site?

Check: Identify one useful action such as a purchase, signup or enquiry and verify how it is measured.

Next step: Set up meaningful event measurement and test it with a real interaction.

What should you do with the results?

Prioritise anything that prevents visitors from using your site, finding important content or completing important actions. Make a short plan instead of trying to fix all ten points in one day.
